Inspire with clear presentations

Science presented with impact

In this presentation training, you will master the art of making your science accessible. You will learn how to create well-structured stories and to connect with your audience.  So your knowledge can create true impact!

Duration: 1,5 day
Location: Amsterdam
2024: November 20 and December 4
2025: March 4 and March 18

Do you want to present your science in an accessible and inspiring way?

Scientific research serves as the foundation for knowledge development, but its impact is only realized when its findings are successfully communicated. This is especially true beyond one’s own field, such as at conferences, interdisciplinary seminars, and within multidisciplinary research consortia. Some knowledge must even transcend the boundaries of the scientific arena to ensure that recommendations and best practices find their way into society. However, this presents a challenge for many scientists: how can you effectively present your insights to those outside their niche, such as politicians, business leaders, or social organizations?

Discover the secrets of effective presentations for different audiences
Learn how to make your research resonate both within and outside your field, such as investors, policy makers and layman. Ensure they listen attentively during your presentation and ask the right questions afterward. When this happens, interesting connections can be made, innovative research can be initiated, and scientific breakthroughs can be achieved. In short, you will learn how to present science with impact.

Create a well-structured story
You learn to create a storyline that is interesting, surprising, or even exciting to your audience. You learn how to make your story relevant to them while being aware of your own goals. You will also be able to connect with your audience, make them willing and curious, and be able to play with their expectations and entice them to interact.

Present with confidence
Afterwards you know how to effectively prepare yourself for any kind of scientific presentation. You know exactly what to do on stage and therefore you are able to share your knowledge with confidence!

During this open training, presented by Marloes ten Kate, a presentation coach, biologist, presenter, and former science journalist, you will learn these and other techniques for presenting science with impact.

Program summary:

Day 1 (morning + afternoon): Compose your story

Based on your own case, you compose your own impactful story:

  • Objective: What can you gain from presenting? What is your specific goal? How does it fit in with your other activities and your short- and long-term planning?
  • Structure: Ensure coherence, clarity, and logical flow in your story
  • Understandable: tailor the content and choice of words to your audience
  • Engagement: attract attention and create a suspenseful narrative from start to finish
  • Relevance: connect with your audience and tailor your story to resonate with them

Preparation for day 2: Prepare your presentation: create the slides and know the content of your story.

Day 2 (half-day): Present with confidence

With Marloes, you will work on your personal presentation style, make effective use of your qualities as a speaker, and work on your voice and posture. You will learn to establish and maintain contact with your audience and effectively engage with them. You will learn how to tell your story in a relaxed, purposeful, and self-confident manner.

About the trainer

Marloes ten Kate has worked as a science journalist and presenter for national radio and television programs and has trained hundreds of (international) researchers as a presentation coach in the techniques required to prepare and deliver effective presentations. Marloes has served as a lecturer at TU Delft, equipping students with invaluable presentation skills. She is founder of Take the Stage and co-founder of Scientific Storytelling, where she trains scientists in the art of telling a comprehensible and captivating story.

“How to communicate your fab (but complicated) scientific data to your audience? With Marloes her coaching my story became so much clearer! I became much more aware of my message and of the story I wanted to tell. This gave confidence and strength!”

Dr. Katja Wolthers
Clinical virologist consultant and Coordinator Marie Curie ITN consortium Organovir at Amsterdam UMC

“Marloes is brilliant at what she does, a lovely manner with calm and efficient approach to getting the best out of her brief. Marloes, grasped my brief, made delivering my message much better and the end result was a win for all of us and many in the audience too.”

Dr. Bharat Pankhania
Senior Clinical Lecturer at University of Exeter Medical School

More reactions of former participants:

“I have attended the Presentation Skills for Scientists training with Marloes together with my colleagues from NHL Stenden. It was very hands-on and meaningful. Not only will it save us time, but it also provides us with tools to create more impact with our presentations in the future. Highly recommended!”

Wilbert van den Eijnde
Associate Lecturer at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences

“I attended Marloes’ workshop on how to make the introduction of a presentation, and it was great. The workshop is a two-ways conversation with a lot of exercises starting from the basics and building up to the point in which you present to Marloes and the other participants. I loved that I got to give and receive feedback also from the group.”

Federica Gugole
Data science and modeling at VSL National Metrology Institute

“Marloes helped me to work on a short company pitch/interview. She gave a very strait-to-the-point advice which helped me improve a lot.”

Alexander Kostenko
Founder at Photosynthetic

“Excellent training that provides relevant skills and tips and tricks to use in our daily professional career. I highly recommend attending this to other (business) people!”

Jasper Wittoeck
Internal Auditor at Dow Chemical Company

“It was an amazing experience working with Marloes. As a scientist transformed into an entrepreneur it is not always easy to communicate what we do effectively. Marloes has been of great help helping me prepare for the Dutch Biotechnology Association Conference. Will definitively work with Marloes again in the future!”

Maria Fátima Lucas
Co-founder and CEO at ZYMVOL, computational chemist

“The feedback was unambiguous: Marloes greatly helped the participants to give better talks and to present their science in a cleaner, more confident, and more engaging manner.”

Stephan Formella
Managing Director Science & Research Boehringer Ingelheim
